The last four iterations of The Whiskymaker’s Reserve sold out rapidly, such is the demand. So, we’re excited to introduce the latest edition in this collectable range… The Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.5 is the highly anticipated new release in a series of limited-edition single malt whiskies from The Lakes Distillery. It has been aged in meticulously sourced Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and red wine casks, and then filled – non-chill filtered – into quatrefoil-shaped bottles. Previous editions have felt quite festive, with lots of Christmas cake fruit, but No.5 feels distinctly North African or Middle Eastern. Medjool dates, roasted pecans, walnut baklava, creamy almonds, dried apricots, Turkish coffee, prunes, crystallised ginger, sultanas, red apple, sweet tagine spices and warm wood; it’s like a trip to the souk. What we always find truly remarkable about these bottlings, is just how mindbogglingly smooth and mature they are for a cask strength whisky bottled at 52% by a distillery that was only established in 2011. In our opinion, No.5 is the most original and maybe our favourite Whiskymaker’s Reserve so far. Amidst the tranquil beauty of Cumbria’s rolling greenery, dramatic fells and sparkling water resides an old Victorian cattle farm that has been converted into a world-class spirits producer. Located on the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake – the only official lake in the Lake District National Park because the others are technically meres or waters) – The Lakes Distillery has been highlighted as one of the top five new distilleries in the world by Time Out USA and one of the “eight distilleries to visit before you die” by World Whisky Day. The quality emanating from this high tech, state of the art distillery should come as no surprise because one of the founders also set up Isle of Arran Distillers, the head whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi cut his teeth at Macallan, and everybody who works in the distillery has a technical degree in distilling. Whisky aficionados need to keep a careful eye on The Lakes Distillery because it’s on course to become an ultimate and highly collectable luxury global brand.
