Native to the tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia, gymnema is a woody plant with a long history in the Ayurvedic apothecary. Today it is recognized in the traditional systems of certain Asian countries. While the leaves are most commonly used, roots and stems can also be used occasionally. Historically, Gymnema Sylvestre was treasured for its ability to assist in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range. One of its common names, gurmar, actually means "sweet destroyer" as it was thought to have the ability to block the taste of sweets, so an individual is less likely to crave them.
Gymnema means "naked" and sylvestre means "from the forest." Gymnema is also known as gurmarbooti, meshasringi, merasingi, pericploca of the woods, Asclepias geminata and Pinus sylvestris.
